Jane Shaw

Jane Shaw is Professor of the History of Religion and Principal of Harris Manchester College, Oxford University. She was, formerly, Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco where she founded a successful artist-in-residence programme, and then Dean for Religious Life and Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University.

She is the author of several books on the history of Christianity: Miracles in Enlightenment England; Octavia, Daughter of God; and Pioneers in Modern Spirituality, as well as a Lent book, A Practical Christianity. She most recently co-authored Gen Z, Explained: The Art of Living in a Digital Age.

She has worked for many years for an inclusive church and the creation of church communities where anyone and everyone can feel a sense of belonging. She is also an advocate for the arts in churches – for all the ways in which the arts introduce us to human experiences beyond our immediate context, foster empathy, and can ultimately be a vehicle for God’s grace.

Jane comes to Greenbelt to speak alongside Linda Woodhead – to their jointly authored new book on Gen Z.
