5 uplifting reads to help you change the world

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting some of the books you might like to read before this year’s festival. Our friends at Church House Bookshop (who look after our G-Books onsite bookshop at the festival) make a start with five books to help you change the world. And they’re offering discounts if you buy them in the next two weeks (before 16th July).

There is No Planet B
Mike Berners-Lee

A practical guide to the change we need at every level if humankind is going to survive the Anthropocene we find ourselves in – the era in which human influence is the dominant source of change to the ecosystem.

Berners-Lee sifts through the greenwash with this evidence-based handbook to becoming ‘Anthropocene-fit’, identifying the values and thinking skills necessary to help us thrive over the next century.

Shameless
Nadia Bolz-Weber

“If religion has been the venue in which the power of sex is taken most seriously, could it also become the place in which a new conversation about it arises?”

Nadia Bolz-Weber has come a long way since the Tuesday night Christian Charm Class she attended as a young teen. In Shameless she seeks a new ethic of sexual flourishing “for every type of body, every type of gender, every type of sex drive, every type of human”. Drawing on her experience and the stories of her parishioners, she navigates the harm done to people by sexual shame and shares the seeds of a sexual revolution.

You Can Change the World!
Margaret Rooke

Be inspired by the stories of 55 young people who’ve dared to change the world. This book gives you change making tips, introduces you to great campaigns, and encourages you with positive voices from teenagers.

You’ll hear from teens like Amika, 18, who fights ‘Period Poverty’, Cameron, 17, who has cerebral palsy and set up his own soccer team ‘Adversity United’ after being sidelined, and Lucy who, aged 14, walked into Tesco head office and persuaded them not to sell eggs from caged hens.

Mentors
Russell Brand

How can being mentored and being a mentor enhance your life?

Russell Brand’s lucid new book encourages us to see ourselves within a chain of mentorship. He tracks the series of people who have influenced him and explores how we can choose, use, and become valuable mentors. Mentoring, he says, helped him “transform from a bewildered and volatile vagabond to a (mostly) present and (usually) focussed husband and father”.

Learn how you can give and receive the help that brings about change – both sought and unexpected.

Yassmin’s Story
Yassmin Abdel-Magied

At 21, Yassmin found herself working on a remote Australian oil and gas rig; the only woman and certainly the only Sudanese-Egyptian-Australian background Muslim woman. She tells us her story and how she wants the world to change in this compellingly fearless memoir, which tackles important questions with wit, insight and warmth.

Yassmin’s Story is on its way over from Australia, but we’ll have it in time for Greenbelt – look out for it in the G-Books tent!
