Panel: Liberty is Near!

Garth Hewitt sings the Chartist Hymnbook and Mike Sanders explores the role of hymns in Chartism, whose activism prefigured the Liberation Theology of our own era.

Singer/songwriter and author Garth Hewitt sang at the first Greenbelt 40 years ago and has performed at many festivals since. His music and writings reflect a spirituality of hope and a simple way of life that rejects violence and affirms equality and human rights.

Dr Mike Sanders is a senior lecturer in Victorian Literature at the University of Manchester. He specialises in the literature and culture of the Chartist movement. His The Poetry of Chartism: Aesthetics, Politics, History is available now.
