Here today – forgotten tomorrow? It’s easy to lap up the media portrayal of Africa as single entity, blighted by famine, war, poverty and AIDS. But within this immense continent there are more peoples, more languages, more cultures, than anywhere else on our world. How is this jewel going to shine again? Is the Africa Commission going to be another Marshall plan for a beleaguered continent? Is the only way into a global economy through accepting a system where the playing fields are not level? Africa always throws up more questions than a lifetime could take to answer. But these are questions of lives, and we must face them.
