Ian Christie is associate professor in the social science and ethics of sustainable development at the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES) in the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK. He has been a full-time academic there since 2011, teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He is co-investigator in the ESRC-funded programme the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP, www.cusp.ac.uk), led by Prof. Tim Jackson. He is also a co-investigator in the ESRC programmes ACCESS (https://accessnetwork.uk/), on environmental social science and policy, and CECAN (www.cecan.ac.uk) on policy design and evaluation in the light of complex systems thinking and practice. Before becoming an academic Ian worked in UK local government, think-tanks and consultancy on environment and sustainability. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of Worldwide Fund for Nature UK. Ian has also been a long-term environmental advisor in the Church of England, of which he is a member. He is a founding member of the independent Surrey Climate Commission. His research and teaching interests include local climate governance, ethics of sustainability and promotion of pro-environmental changes in values and behaviour.
