A Greener Festival Award

A Greener Festival Award

We are very happy to announce that Greenbelt has been given a prestigious award for sustainability.

A Greener Festival look at festivals around the world and assess data around their fuel and water usage, how their audiences travel to their events, their use of local suppliers, and so on. Then they send in an inspector to see how things work onsite.

Greenbelt is one of only six festivals in the UK to be given an AGF award, so we are really chuffed and want to thank YOU for your part in helping us achieve it.

Our award recognises that we are a well managed event, continuously working to become more sustainable.

So, how did we (that’s the royal “we”, or, in other words, you) do it?

  • The 3,000 re-usable Great Greenbelt Cups in the beer tent. These saved several more thousand plastic glasses being thrown away.
  • A 30% increase in the number of people using the shuttle bus (and other public transport) to get to the festival.
  • Reducing the amount of waste we produced by more than four tonnes and increasing the percentage that was recycled.
  • Reducing our energy usage by 11% through careful monitoring of how the site was powered.
  • The Vibing Team upcycling decor from previous years as they make the site even more beautiful.
  • Printing the Festival Guide on recycled paper with sustainable printers.
  • The “Leave No Trace” campsite policy, meaning a beautifully clear field at the end of the festival – a special well done to all of you on this one.
  • The brilliant food bank donations we made to the local Kettering Foodbank at the end of the festival.
  • Using local suppliers for everything from milk to gin and vodka to cake.

So, thanks again for helping us achieve this award. We keep you posted with our plans to improve on this even more at GB17 :: The Common Good.
