The Trouble With Growth

Is economic growth inevitable? Does it have to be? Reflecting on the Occupy London protest at St Paul’s Cathedral in his time as canon chancellor, Giles Fraser asks if the root causes of the financial crisis lie in hubristic belief in economic growth.

Dr Giles Fraser is priest-in- charge at St Mary’s Newington, in Elephant and Castle, London and writes the column Loose Canon for the Guardian. In October 2011, Occupy London based their protest outside St Paul’s. Fraser said that he was happy for people to “exercise their right to protest peacefully” outside the cathedral. In October 2011 Fraser resigned as he could not sanction any policy of the chapter of St Paul’s to use force to remove the protesters.
