With an growing distrust in the workings of democracy and the rise of authoritarian ‘strong men’ on the one hand and increasing localism and community organising on the other, it might seem as if our great democratic ‘experiment’ is nearing the end of its life. From first-past-the-post to proportional representation, it seems as if democracy the world over simply isn’t working quite right any more – if ever it did.
