Sustainable development and the forgotten commandment

Greenbelt 2002 coincides with the beginning of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, the 10-years after ‘follow up’ to the Rio Earth Summit of 1992. But why is the environment a Christian issue? And how do we reconcile the needs of people and planet? Through a combination of facts, science and theology, this seminar develops the Biblical Sabbath as a basis for Christian understanding and action on the core issues of sustainable development.

Dr Peter Carruthers is Executive Director of the John Ray Initiative (JRI), an organisation promoting understanding and action on the environment, through science and Christian principles. An agricultural scientist by training, he is also Chairman of Agricultural Christian Fellowship and a Trustee of Farm Crisis Network.
