Venue Managers

Venue Managers

The team is responsible for the management of Greenbelt’s sixty or so venues – indoor, outdoor and in tents - ensuring the smooth running of the programme and the safety of festivalgoers.

Volunteers should be available to cover 6-8 hours per day of the festival on a rota basis from 8.30 am until midnight.

Venue Managers are assigned to a specific venue for the duration of the festival weekend and will be on duty one or two at a time, depending on the size and popularity of the venue and the experience of the volunteer.

Volunteer Venue Managers should:

  • have confidence, authority and common sense
  • be able to respond calmly to problems which may arise
  • be able to show initiative and work on their own
  • be quick to learn new skills
  • be outgoing and personable
  • have an awareness of health and safety issues
  • be aware of the importance of following instructions
  • be able to work as part of a team

Volunteers need to provide two referees. Venue Managers within workshop venues will also need to complete a CRB check.

The Venue Management team provides support, training, and a point of contact for all Venue Managers onsite.

There is a briefing session on Thursday afternoon before the festival opens. All Venue Managers are required to be at this briefing.

Venue Managers are responsible for:

General

  • providing a focal point in the venue for contributors, stewards and festival-goers
  • ensuring that programmed events run to time

Health and Safety

  • carrying out a Risk Assessment for the venue
  • monitoring trip hazards
  • checking that fire extinguishers are in place and knowing how to use them
  • keeping fire exits and walkways clear
  • maintaining walkway markers (with paint or tape)
  • implementing evacuation procedures
  • knowing how to call for assistance if required
  • removing rubbish
  • knowing what is permitted in individual venue (eg candles, drapes)

Some venues have programmed events happening in them. Venue Managers in these venues will have additional responsibilities regarding speakers and performers, for example checking that required equipment is provided, keeping the programme to time and possibly introducing speakers too.

Venue capacities are set by the Fire Safety team and are monitored and enforced by the Venue Stewards responsible for the venue.
