Going by Car

Cheltenham racecourse is on the A435 towards Bishops Cleeve and Evesham from Cheltenham, within easy reach of the M5 and the A40/M40. Follow the Gold Cup Route from Cheltenham. This is well signposted.

For those travelling by Sat Nav, the postcode is GL50 4SH.

Below are several maps and directions from various parts of the UK. We've also tried to provide an indication of how long it should take from specific locations, so that you can plan your journey accordingly. However - these times are best guesses and aren't alway accurate.

We have also arranged an online liftshare forum where you can meet others traveling to Greenbelt this year and arrange to share your journey with them.

Greenbelt Map

Travelling From London / The South East
The Orange Route or Yellow Route

From North London, head towards Oxford on the M40 and then turn onto the A40 at Junction 8 to Cheltenham.

From South London (or the South in general), you can take the M4 to Junction 15 (Swindon) and take the A419 North towards Cirencester where it becomes the A417 (don't take the A419 into Cirencester).* Then pick up the A417 North and turn right onto the A435 towards Cheltenham. (Follow Route
1
from Cheltenham)

If you're coming from Northeast London, you can also head North on the M11 towards Cambridge and then take the A14 as described for the East Anglia route below. This is quite a detour, though, so only to be used if there's chaos on the roads around London!

* If you can't handle sharp corners or hills (if you're towing a caravan, for example) then don't take the A417 but pick up the A429 (right / North) and when you reach the A40 take a left to Cheltenham.

The journey should take about:
- 2 hrs 45 from Ashford
- 2 hrs 40 from Brighton
- 2 hrs 15 from Guildford
- 2 hours from central London

Travelling From The South West
The Red Route

Take the M5 to Junction 11**, then the A40 directly into Cheltenham.

You can either head into the centre of Cheltenham until you hit the A435 where you will turn left (North) towards Bishops Cleeve (follow Route 3) or you can turn off the A40 left and head towards Swindon Village on the A4013 where you should pick up the A4019 and follow Route 2 to the Racecourse.

** You can't get off at Junction 10 if you're going north, so make sure that you do use Junction 11! If you do miss the turn-off, the best thing to do is come off at Junction 9 and turn right onto the A46. Then turn left onto the A435 towards Cheltenham (see Route 3).

The journey should take about:
- 3 hrs 50 from Penzance
- 2 hrs 40 from Plymouth
- 2 hrs 20 from Barnstaple

Travelling From The North West
The Brown Route

Take the M6 towards Birmingham and then pick up the M5 (South) to Junction 10 then the A4019, follow Route 2.

Alternatively you can get off at Junction 9, and at the A46 Teddington Hands roundabout turn right onto the A435 (Route 3).

You can also pick up the A435 outside Birmingham (M42 Junction 3) and travel south until you hit GB (see Route 3), although you're probably best using the M5 unless there's heavy traffic (a distinct possibility for August Bank Holiday weekend!).

The journey should take about:
- 5 hours from Glasgow
- 3 hrs 40 from Carlisle
- 2 hrs 50 from Blackpool
- 2 hrs 30 from Manchester or Liverpool
- 1 hour from Birmingham

Travelling From The North / North East
The Brown Route or Green Route

From the North, take the M1 heading South. From the North East, take the A46 towards Leicester, which should take you to Junction 21a of the M1. Get onto the M1 at this point and take the next exit (Junction 21) as below.

Travelling South on the M1, come off at Juction 21 (just after Leicester Forest East Services) and take the M69 towards Coventry (take care to get in the right lane at this junction). Then take the M6 towards Birmingham*** and come off at Junction 4 onto the M42 towards Bromsgrove. Stay on the M42 until the M5 and head South towards Worcester.

Stay on the M5 until Junction 10 then take the A4019 into Cheltenham. At this point you can follow Route 2 to the Racecourse.

***If you don't like motorways you can take the more direct (but much slower) Green Route at this point by continuing South on the M69 and then the A46. The A46 will take you all the way to just North of Cheltenham, where you can pick up the A435 south directly to the racecourse (see Route 3).

The journey should take about:
- 4 hrs 15 from Newcastle
- 2 hrs 40 from Leeds
- 2 hrs 30 from Doncaster
- 1 hr 50 from Nottingham
- 1 hr 10 from Coventry

Travelling From East Anglia
The Brown Route or Green Route

Head towards Huntingdon and pick up the A14 West until you reach the M6. (You can join the A14 at Cambridge if this is easier - this is where the M11 from London terminates). You can also join the A14 from the A1(M) if necessary.

Continue on the M6 towards Birmingham and follow the instructions as for the North/North East above.

If you want to take the more direct A46 route (as described above) you will need to leave the M6 at Junction 2.

The journey should take about:
- 3 hrs 50 from Norwich
- 2 hrs 20 from Peterborough
- 2 hours from Huntingdon

Travelling From The West / Wales
The Purple Route

From Hereford, take the A438 to Tewkesbury and then pick up the A38 South (right turn) towards Coombe Hill and Gloucester. At Coombe Hill turn left onto the A4019 and follow Route 2

From South Wales, you can pick up the A40 towards Gloucester, and follow this road across the M5 into Cheltenham. Turn left onto the A4013 and then go straight over the A4019 to follow Route 2. You can alternatively follow the A4019 into the centre of Cheltenham and turn left onto the A435 (Route 1) - see the map below.

From North Wales take the A5 towards Shrewsbury and continue towards Telford until it becomes the M54. This joins the M6 at Junction 11a at Wolverhampton where you can head South towards Birmingham until Junction 8 where you turn onto the M5. Turn off at Junction 10 onto the A4019 towards Cheltenham and follow Route 2 to the racecourse.

The journey should take about:
- 3 hr 20 from Bangor
- 3 hours from Aberystwyth
- 1 hr 50 from Swansea
- 1 hour from Hereford
