Reshaping Christian history for reader and viewer

Diarmaid MacCulloch’s History of Christianity refocused readers and viewers on that fact that our faith is an Eastern religion. Here he discusses how its centre might easily have been Baghdad rather than Rome, emphasising the power of ideas to reshape human affairs.

Sir Diarmaid MacCulloch is a fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Historical Society and of the Society of Antiquaries of London; he also co-edits the Journal of Ecclesiastical History. He was ordained as a deacon in the Church of England in 1987 and now writes and broadcasts history: most notably A History of Christianity: the first three thousand years.
