In April 2003 I visited the Gospel Music Association Week in Nashville, USA with the remit of checking out potential performers for Greenbelt. After seeing around 75 bands, I was a little drained, but one band in particular stood out with their originality and energy on stage.
LA Symphony are renowned and revered in the hip-hop community, having been formed in 1997 during a time when West Coast hip-hop was better known for gangster rap with its repetitive themes of sex and violence. They’ve shared the stage and collaborated with artists as diverse as P.O.D, Out Of Eden, Black Eyed Peas, Xzibit, Good Charlotte, Jurassic 5 and Dilated Peoples; and 2004 will see their first appearance at Greenbelt.
So, what can we expect? Well, with the combined creative energies of MCs CookBook, Flynn, Joey the Jerk, Sharlok Poems, and Uno Mas – along with DJ Type A, L.A.S will bring sonic synergies of poetic satire and classic beatsmithing. Beethoven it is not, but creative, energetic, fun and inspirational it most certainly is.
LA Symphony will be joining our Sunday "eclectic" lineup, which will also feature Greenbelt favourites No More Horses and Denys Baptiste’s jazz spectacular 'Let Freedom Ring'. So expect the unexpected, and bring an open mind and your dancing shoes with you.
