This small team of 8 volunteers monitors noise both on and off the festival site in order to ensure compliance with levels in Greenbelt’s Public Entertainments Licence.
The Noise team operates two shifts per day of the festival – from 12 noon to 6.00 pm and from 6.00 pm until midnight. There are three areas for the noise team to cover during each shift –
1. Mainstage – monitoring of sound levels when the mainstage is in use.
2. Response – monitoring of noise levels in and around venues onsite.
3. Offsite – monitoring of noise levels at pre-determined points around the perimeter of the festival site.
The festival site has a curfew set at 11.00pm, so noise needs to be monitored after this time too.
Greenbelt distributes leaflets to local residents in advance of the festival weekend. A phone number is provided so that any noise-related complaints can be made as problems arise over the weekend. Complaints are logged in the Control Room, noise levels monitored by the Noise team and appropriate action taken.
Safety equipment, sound meters, hi-visibility jackets and ID cards will be provided.
Volunteers should have:-
• experience of noise control -
which may come from a technical/sound engineering/events background, or from an enforcement/Environmental Health background.
• good communication and people skills
• confidence in negotiation and the ability to enforce necessary regulations
• a reasonable level of physical fitness, as a fair amount of walking is required
• a clean driving licence, and a car is useful but not essential
Potential volunteers could be students who need to have had relevant experience for courses in Sound Engineering, Environmental and Occupational Health, Health and Safety courses.
