‘I am delighted to pay tribute to the stimulating role played by the Methodist Collection at a crucial stage in my life, helping me realise just how much I relished the challenge of writing about art.’
Richard Cork, art critic for the New Statesman

JESUS IN THE EVERYDAY
The Methodist Collection of Modern Art

Not everyone knows that Greenbelt’s new partners The Methodist Church owns a collection of art described as ‘the best denominational collection of modern art outside the Vatican’. We are therefore delighted to present an exhibition of highlights from the Collection – full title, The Methodist Church Collection of Modern and Contemporary Christian Art – which includes such leading artists of the last 100 years, as Norman Adams, Elizabeth Frink, Patrick Heron, Georges Rouault and Graham Sutherland.

Not only that, but we will be showing several of the newest acquisitions to the collection including works by Craigie Aitchison, Maggi Hambling, Susie Hamilton, Clive Hicks-Jenkins and Peter Howson.

The newest acquisition, Christ Writes in the Dust by Clive Hicks-Jenkins, comes direct to Greenbelt from the artist’s major retrospective exhibition at the National Library of Wales. The artist, described by Robert Macdonald as ‘one of the most powerful figurative painters in Wales’, will open the Greenbelt exhibition on Friday evening.

A guide to the collection will be available at the Festival, price £5.

We are especially grateful to the Gibbs Family Trust and the trustees of the Collection for their support for this project.
