World To Rights

at Greenbelt 2009: Standing in the Long Now

The Greenbelt World to Rights project is part of a nationwide tour throughout 2009. Participation is open to all ages and consists of 2 of performing arts workshops in which participants explore issues of children’s rights through physical theatre, music, and dance and learn simple scenes for performance.

The project culminates with a half-hour theatrical performance. Starting with a basic knowledge of rights, participants explore Victorian times to better understand the importance of protection, healthcare, safety, a loving family and an education.

The workshops include life in the cotton mill, life on the streets of London and a ragged school, and finally life in a Victorian circus. Various scenes portraying children’s lack of rights 150 years ago help those taking part and those watching the performance to gain a sense of privilege, and responsibility to others around the world today who still have no rights.

The performance ends with a DVD which offers a powerful insight into the lives of children living on the streets of Manila and the work of Jigsaw, a Christian project supported by CMS which brings real hope to hundreds of children who have no voice and nowhere to turn.

You can register to take part in World to Rights at Greenbelt by signing up online in advance or by coming along to the CMS venue and signing up. A great event for ALL the family, for groups of friends, and for individuals to get involved in! We hope to see you there!
