Arena : Monday

Why, in the worlds 3rd biggest democratic economy, are 250 million people denied their human rights. The caste system still governs peoples opportunities in India today

Prem Mitra from Bangalore India is an activist on behalf of Dalits, a theologian, a priest in the Church of South India and the chair of A Rocha India.

A Rocha India are a Christian environmental agency and one of their major projects is pioneering research into new sustainable ways of addressing human/ elephant conflict.

Prem has also been involved in a wide range of environmental campaigns and is urging the church and local politicians to address the environmental impact of India’s rapid economic growth. He was inspired to be involved in environmental issues through a combination of Buddhist and Christian thought.

He has been involved in a wide range of community projects and campaigns to promote opportunities and equal rights for Dalits. Dalits, formerly known as 'untouchables', are still denied basic human rights in many parts of India.

Garth Hewitt says: "I am delighted Prem will be at Greenbelt - he is a real inspiration. He has a gentle spirituality that underpins his activism. I have worked with him in India on Dalit issues and furthermore - we have hugged trees together!"
