How to lead a film discussion group

at Greenbelt 2008: Rising Sun

Vic Thiessen

Saturday

More and more church leaders, seeking fresh ways to reach out to their members, are discovering the value in using films to explore theological and ethical themes. This interaction with contemporary culture can be illuminating and exciting. But how does one go about starting a film discussion group? What are the best venues? What films should one watch? What are the legal issues? What are the best ways to facilitate film discussions? These are only a few of the questions which will be explored, with the help of film clips, in this talk, led by someone who has facilitated 500 film discussions during the past decade.

Vic Thiessen is a Canadian Mennonite theologian who has worked as the director of the London Mennonite Centre since 2002. He is a regular speaker at Greenbelt on the subject of film and theology and he has led film discussion groups at the Guy Chester Centre and St. Ethelburga's. Vic has hosted a film night in his home every week for the past nine years and is the film writer for the Canadian Mennonite magazine.
