The Kitchen is a brand new venue for Greenbelt 08. Read about the ideas behind it here.
kitchen |_ki ch _n| - noun
- a room or area where food is prepared and cooked.
- a set of fixtures, cabinets, and appliances that are sold together and installed in such a room or area : a complete kitchen at a bargain price.
- cuisine : the dried shrimp pastes of the Thai kitchen.
- informal the percussion section of an orchestra.
- [as adj. ] (of a language) in an uneducated or domestic form : kitchen Swahili.
- The Kitchen:
- provides a space for Greenbelters to think through practicalities, cook up ideas and hatch a plot, which they take away and implement elsewhere…
- is ambitious with its content – focused on transforming our world, starting 'round here', in the neighbourhood… Content can be 'glocal' - global in reach, though with a local implication…
- is about fun - the Kitchen is frequently the best place to be at a party, provides warmth, generates a buzz is a space to be creative, paint, draw, have a brew, talk, listen, meet… and cook up a plan…
- enables those attending to take the 'next step' when they leave… to try 'everything imaginable'… (volunteering for a local charity, fostering a child, hosting meals, demonstrating at the town hall, organising 'Peace Week', doing home-visits or establishing a winter night shelter…)
- contrasts with Generous (which focuses on individual acts promoting sustainable living). The Kitchen focuses on collaboration and journeying together – based on a belief that injustice can bring very different people, faiths and ideas together to work for transformation. This is Greenbelt.
- is about nurturing practical neighbourliness in and out of the festival… it emphasises the practical and pragmatic which can be transferred and applied at home…
