Larry Norman: a farewell

In his obituary in The Guardian, Steve Turner wrote that Norman ‘was instinctively an outsider, resigned to the fact that his music would cause offence to the church and the music industry, and once summed his position up as “too secular for the Christians and too Christian for the secularists”’. He combined art, poetry and obliqueness with outright propaganda. Always uncompromising, he regularly ruffled feathers in pursuit of his singular artistic vision, but left behind an outstanding collection of songs. Larry appeared at Greenbelt several times in the 1970s and 1980s and made a brief reappearance in the early 1990s. He made an impression on many festival-goers. This year Greenbelt will be paying tribute to Larry Norman with a special concert in the Centaur venue. A variety of performers will be delivering their take on Larry’s songs, covering tunes from his back catalogue. There will also be thoughts, reminiscences, stories and more besides. A fitting farewell, we hope.
