at Greenbelt 2008: Rising Sun

Come and stand on our giant sundial and tells the time from your shadow.

The Sun is up ... another day has started. The ancient fear of the dark and the unknown now gives way to the modern fear of "are there enough minutes and seconds in the day to carry out all my tasks?" Whilst synchronised seconds are needed to run an efficient train network, Greenbelt time has always been a bit more fluid (is it time for a little something yet?). Sundials take us back to an earlier age when the sun and the seasons were the things that ruled our lives. You can appreciate the mistake our ancestors made in thinking that the Sun was God; it gives us light, warmth, crops, makes colours look better - sight is keener in sunlight, the Sun even controls the clouds and modifies the tides. We give you a moment to reflect(!), not on the Sun but who made it. By all means think about times past but also how the rising sun gives you a new day, a new start, a chance to do new things. Take time at Greenbelt, try some out. The sundials on site are not just functional (when the sun shines) but are also things of beauty and wonder in their own right. Sundials - a quiet moment at a busy festival.
