The Church Times Top 50 religious films

Into Great Silence (number 49) \"Silence\" The most recent film in the list: a documentary about about monastic life at Grand Chartreuse in the French Alps. Reflecting the life of the Carthusian monks, it is largely silent, and more than two hours long, aiming to provide something of a meditative retreat in itself. The director, Philip Gröning, waited 16 years to get permission to film it. Intolerance: Love\'s Struggle Throughout the Ages (number 30) \"Intolerance\" This silent film tells four stories of people destroyed by intolerance through the ages. Babylon falls to religious rivalry; the Pharisees condemn Jesus; the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre claims an engaged couple; and US social reformers wreck the lives of another young couple. The Mission (number 1) \"Mission\" Set in the 1750s, Robert Bolt’s screenplay focuses on the Church’s involve- ment in colonialism in Latin America. Fundamentally, the film is about moral choices, contrasting a non-violent priest (Jeremy Irons) with a former slaver (Robert De Niro). When Spain sells the colony to Portugal, the threat of slavery returns. Irons and De Niro must work out how to respond when the Indians under their care are threatened by a colonial army. Cardinal Altamirano (Ray McAnally):“Tell them they must leave the missions. They must submit to the will of God.” Fr Gabriel (Jeremy Irons):“They say it was the will of God that they came out of the jungle and built the mission. They don’t understand why God has changed his mind.” Babette’s Feast (number 6) (Babettes gæstebud) Set in a fishing village in 19th-century Denmark, a French housekeeper meets two sisters carrying on the work of their late father, who was pastor to a dwindling religious sect. She enters their household, and her warmth and sensuousness grad-ually have an impact on a frus- trated and austere community.
