Letter to Patience and other poems

John Haynes, a former university lecturer in Nigeria, came from nowhere to win the 2006 Costa Poetry Award (formerly the Whitbread) with Letter to Patience, a stunning long poem which tackles the many tensions of cross-cultural relationships, both personal and political.

At Greenbelt John will be reading from Letter to Patience and from a new work in progress, which deals with “the poet\'s attempt to understand the Christianity of an old dying African woman, whose faith is very clear and direct, and makes him imagine what it might be like to actually meet Jesus the ordinary man and \'have a chat\'.”

“Haynes is the equal of Muldoon, Heaney or Hill…. Full of wit, learning and humanity….” The Guardian

Praise for Letter to Patience:

“A marvellous book, an exemplar of sorts; as for the virtuosity it is entirely at the service of a vision.” George Szirtes (TS Eliot prizewinner), Poetry Review

“The whole poem is rich in detail, and sensuously alive.” Jeremy Hooker
