The Manchester Passion (with a Q&A session)

The Manchester Passion transmitted live on BBC3 at 21.00 on Good Friday April 14th 2006. Performed on the streets of the city it fused music from Manchester bands with the words of the Gospels to retell the story of Jesus' final hours.

The programme created huge press and public interest, making front page news in national newspapers and featuring on national BBC television news programmes. For the live event in Manchester over 7 thousand people crammed into Albert Square to watch, and the response from the television audience was extraordinary - BBC3 doubled their normal Friday evening audience and the BBC were inundated with phone calls, letters and emails of congratulations from viewers with ages ranging from 9 to 90. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the production team involved – Sue Judd, Any King-Dabbs, and Philip Sheppard. Sue Judd is an Executive Producer in the BBC Classical Music Television department. She has produced and directed many large-scale live events - from General Elections for ITN to opera relays from the Royal Opera House for the BBC - as well as producing award-winning drama-documentaries such as The Genius of Mozart and Beethoven. Andy King-Dabbs is a Senior Producer in the BBC Classical Music Television department. He has produced and directed many award-winning documentaries for the BBC including The Dancers Body and The Genius of Mozart. Andy came up with the original idea of setting the Passion in Manchester using the music of Manchester & then further developed the script with co-writer & producer Stephen Powell. Philip Sheppard arranged the music for Manchester Passion for a 16-piece string orchestra & a trio of busking disciples playing guitar, cello and accordian. Philip is a composer & Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music. He has previously worked with the likes of Oasis and David Bowie. He has recently published a book called Music Makes Your Child Smarter.
