Mark Braverman

Dr. Mark Braverman is a Jewish American. Traveling to Israel/Palestine in 2006 he was transformed by witnessing the occupation of Palestine and by encounters with peace activists and civil society leaders from the Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities. In his writing and speaking Dr. Braverman focuses on the role of religious beliefs and theology in the current discourse and the function of interfaith relations in the current search for a resolution of the conflict. Dr. Braverman serves on the advisory board of Friends of Sabeel North America and on the Board of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions-USA. He is a cofounder of Friends of Tent of Nations North America, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Palestinian land rights in historic Palestine. Dr. Braverman consults to and writes for the Israel Palestine Mission Network of the Presbyterian Church USA and is a consultant for Evangelicals for Middle East Understanding. Dr. Braverman presented an address at the launch of the Kairos Palestine document in Bethlehem in 2009 and at the global Kairos conference in Johannesburg in 2010. In 2012 he led a panel on Kairos theology at the “Where We Dwell in Common” International Ecumenical Conference in Assisi Italy and led a weeklong seminar on Kairos theology at the Iona Abbey in Scotland. He currently serves as Program Director for Kairos USA, a movement to unify and mobilize American Christians to take a prophetic stand for a just peace in Israel and Palestine.

Dr. Braverman is the author of Fatal Embrace: Christians, Jews, and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land. in which he traces his own journey as a Jew struggling with the difficult realities of modern Israel. The book delivers a strong message to Jews and Christians alike: it is not anti-Semitic to stand up for justice for the Palestinian people. Describing the spiritual and psychological forces driving the discourse in America, in Israel, within the Jewish community, and within the church, Braverman reviews postwar Christian theology with respect to the status of Judaism, the issue of the land, and implications for interfaith relations, turning to the prophets’ cry for justice and to Jesus’ transformative ministry to show the way forward. He is the author of the upcoming A Wall in Jerusalem: Hope, Healing and the Struggle for Peace in Israel and Palestine. His writings, blog, and sermons can be found at www.markbraverman.org.
