Christine Townsend studied the violin as a Charles Oldham and Countess of Munster scholar first with her father, then with David Martin, Diana Cummings and Emanuel Hurwitz at the Royal Academy of Music.
She has since had a successful and varied career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. She has been guest leader of the Hallé and the Bournemouth Sionfonietta, and a frequent guest principal with the London Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In addition she has made numerous recordings for BBC radio and television as leader of the New English Orchestra and All Souls Orchestra.
She has given many performances at venues such as the Edinburgh and Salzburg Festivals and as a chamber musician she has given frequent acclaimed performances at the South Bank in the partnership Duo Dunamis with the pianist Stephen Robbings. Christine has a longstanding association with Greenbelt and has appeared as soloist and orchestral leader numerous times.
