My Greenbelt Five: Becky Smith
We’re asking people for My Greenbelt Five – five things at this year’s Greenbelt that they’re excited about. To see all Greenbelt Fives, click here »
Here’s the selections of Becky Smith, the Greenbelt Youth Participation Coordinator.
She writes: “Obviously I would love to list the entire Youth Programme here, but I shall resist and tell you my personal Top 5 (in no particular order)…”
1. The Proclaimers (Sunday on Mainstage)
I really hope that they will play “I’m Gonna Be” – otherwise known as the 500 Miles song – as the sight of thousands Greenbelters marching on the spot will make me smile no end.
2. Living Library Lunches (Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the youth venue The Shed)
This new piece of programming will sit nicely alongside the already successful regulars of Cake and Debate and Acoustic Cafe, giving young people a chance to speak to ‘experts’ about different topics. I think we all find big issues like Climate Change and Criminal Justice a bit tricky to really get our heads around so I’m excited that we have a space for young people to bring their questions and get involved in conversation.
3. Silent Disco (Big Top)
The nightly silent events in the Big Top will be amazing. I have never been much of a dancer but even I am tempted to bust a move in the Silent Discos. There will be 2 DJs per night so you can choose who you listen to and that means no-one can say you’re dancing out of time as they can’t be sure what you can hear! Excellent!
4. OperaUpClose performing La Bohème (Saturday in Centaur)
I have seen an opera or two in my time (complete with surtitles) but I imagine this performance will be something else! If you have never seen opera I think this could be a great way to ease yourself in as the performance is in English and has been given a modern twist. If you are an opera aficionado then why not try something a bit different!
5. Weapons of Sound (Saturday on Mainstage, plus workshops for youth and all-age)
I have seen these guys play before and I was blown away. They are part of the reason I started drumming in a samba band and I have been looking forward to their slots ever since they first agreed to return to Greenbelt.
