Images 34 – Best of British Illustration 2010

I had the great pleasure of attending the opening of Images 34 last night, the Association of Illustrators' annual exhibition and awards for the best in British contemporary illustration throughout the past year.

This year, the exhibition is once again held in the London College of Communication for the next six days before it is off on tour around the country.

It's an expansive and wide-ranging collection of illustrations in a huge range of media, from simple pen and pencil drawings to computer-aided design, printing, and paint. The exhibition is broken up into several sections, including work for Editorial (several covers of the Economist were featured - including a beautiful satirical watercolour of the jobs crisis as a threatening black cloud, and a Soviet-red pastiche of Vladimir Putin), Books, Children's Books, and New Talent for student illustrators.

The awards were announced at the opening, with the big winner on the evening being illustrator David Hughes for his book "Walking The Dog" - an honest, down-to-earth and funny story of David's relationship with the dog prescribed to him by his doctor to give him regular exercise.

The exhibition is at the London College of Communication in Elephant and Castle, South East London, from today (8th September) until the 14th September. Admission is free - for opening times and more information, see the AOI website.

The exhibition will then be on tour around the country, so if you're near any of the following galleries, do go and see the best that British illustration has to offer...
