Announcing: Gil Scott-Heron at Greenbelt 2010

We're thrilled to announce that Gil Scott-Heron will headline Mainstage at Greenbelt 2010.

Gil is a pioneer of socially-conscious soul music; a legend of spoken word, who - in recognition of his poetry as showcased in "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" - has sometimes been dubbed "The Godfather of Rap"; an intelligent activist and flat-out the coolest man you will ever see - we're so excited about Gil coming to Mainstage and are breathless in anticipation of what his show may bring.

Gil arrives at Greenbelt on the back of "I'm New Here", his first album for fifteen years. Rather than treading ground he's trodden before, "I'm New Here" marries Gil's brilliant vocals with atmospheric accompaniment reminiscent of the sounds of Burial and Massive Attack, filtered through the blues. It has been rapturously received, with the review on Pitchfork breaking it down:-

Three songs reveal him as an adept interpreter of three generations' worth of roots music: Robert Johnson's "Me and the Devil" rendered as vintage Massive Attack, a minimalist, piano-driven orchestral reworking of the Brook Benton-written Bobby "Blue" Bland classic "I'll Take Care of You", and the unexpected but deftly claimed title track, sourced from Smog. [...] Comparisons have been made to what Rick Rubin did for Johnny Cash in the 90s, and the parallels are there: I'm New Here and American Recordings are both cover-heavy, starkly-produced releases where rebellious icons become reflective as they hit their sixties.

Upon Gil's return to public life, Newsnight did an interview with him which is a great introduction to the importance of his body of work, and . It's on Youtube, and part one and part two are embedded below, alongside some other videos to act as a primer for Gil's Mainstage performance.

Ok, he sounds quite good and will probably be a great headliner but you didn't have to big it up for weeks about an act the majority have never heard of.

Doesn't sound like he would appeal to the youth market, especially headlining. Centaur perhaps?

Sam not meaning to be rude but what you on about? Firstly Greenbelt is primarily an arts event not a youth event. Secondly err hip hop and similar genres seem rather popular with many ' youth' the proto rap of scott heron is where it all began. And and 'youth' asking who he is tell them to check out the credits for the samples used on kanye west's last album.
No headliner is going to please everyone but for his contribution to musical history gil is the most significant name i can remember at Greenbelt.
And his latest album proves the man is still a significant relevant force.
If sam is right and the majority has never heard of gil, well even more respect to gb for educating the masses. If Greenbelt can't blow their own trumpet for landing this booking then they never going to be able to.

fine, fair point. but why did we have to wait ages to hear about the headliners? it felt (to me) like a big climax to something that wasn't really at all.

I agree its frustrating sam. But i expect 90 percent of delays are simply about how long it takes to confirm names. Greenbelt used to make mistakes and announce names when they seemed certain but not finally confirmed. Now they seem to wait till the ink has dried on contracts. Suspect they held back on some of the smaller names until they had headline names so web site gave a fair impression of the diversity. Some of bigger artists may also want to announce all their tour dates first themselves, delaying things further.
No idea if this build up was office creating hype or a contactual delay that folks were genuinely excited about. So share the frustration just doubt Greenbelt can do much about it.
Ps sam sorry if the tone of my last post seemed bit aggressive, reads more so than intended. I get enthusiastic about bookings, and more irritated than i should with folks who don't share my enthusiasm.
