Christian Aid: Tracing The Tax

Our long-term partner Christian Aid are back at Greenbelt this year with a dramatic venue - dare you get lost in the Tax Maze - and get involved with their latest campaign to eradicate poverty?

Battling tax dodging is one of their key campaigns at the moment, so here's some information from them to bring you up to speed...

Tax dodging is a scandal and 50% of world trade reported takes place through tax havens.

“There is a building in the Cayman Island that houses supposedly 12,000 US-based corporations. That’s either the biggest building in the world or the biggest tax scam in the world”
Barack Obama

Illegal, tax-related tax evasion alone will be responsible for some 5.6million deaths of young children in the developing world between 2000 and 2015. That is almost 1,000 a day. Half are already dead. Poor countries have the resources to help work their own way out of poverty. But it’s multinational companies that are reaping the rewards.

Christian Aid is calling for mandatory country-by-country reporting, this would force the transparency required for poor nations to demand an appropriate level of tax from the countries operating in their country. For some case study examples of how tax dodging has impacted poor communities see Death and Taxes and other policy documents on the Christian Aid website.
